< TRAINING INTRODUCTION >

There are many factors to consider when you want to know how long it takes for you to gain and build muscle mass. Questions like are you eating enough and the right nutrients to accelerate muscle growth, are you exercising correctly and regularly and do you have the genes for quick muscle growth need to be addressed.

In this article, we shall discuss whether you have the genetic make up to gain and build muscles quickly. Don't despair if you don't because this is only one of the several factors that determine how long it takes for you to build muscle mass.

It is certainly helpful to know your body type when you want to build muscles. By knowing your own body type, you can then plan your nutritional and exercise program to suit your specific body type to encourage muscle growth.

We shall discuss the 3 common body types and their characteristics here.

  • Endomorph

You have naturally big frame body and usually have a round face, wide hips, big bones and slow metabolism. You are the type that gain weight and body fat easily. However, you also have potential for gaining muscle mass quickly. Only problem is that your muscles may be hiding under your body fat making you look big bulky and clumsy. Your six pack abs is hidden under your tummy fat is not going to show.
So you will have to build muscles and then burn off the fats to reveal your muscle definition. That means you will take slightly longer time than the next body type to show off your muscle gain and mass because you need time to cut away body fats as well.
  • Mesomorph

You are blessed with a naturally muscular body and have wide shoulders, small waist, athletic body frame structure, low body fat with a somewhat high metabolism. With your natural predisposition, you can pack on muscles real fast and are the type that can take up bodybuilding as a career if you want to. You excel naturally in sports and will always have that sexy and handsome body that is to everyone's envy.
You are the type that will not take a long time to see your muscle gaining size, mass and definition. In fact, if you train, eat and rest correctly, you will visibly see your muscles growing week after week right before your eyes until you hit a body building plateau.
  • Ectomorph

You are the skinny type with small muscles, very very high metabolism, narrow shoulders, hips and waist. You find it hard to put on weight and muscles no matter how much you eat. You will need much more greater effort than others to build muscle mass on your skinny frame. People call you the hard gainer. You will take a longer time and need extra effort to gain muscle mass. Although it can be done, it is a constant battle for you because you are fighting what nature has given you.

Most people fall in between the three types. For example, a person can be a mixture of Mesomorph and Endomorph or Mesomorph and Ectomorphs.

Now that you have identified your body type, you can then write down your goals, objectives and the methodology you wish to take to gain muscle mass. By having a specific body building program to follow, it allows you to take concrete actions each day to achieve your muscle gain goals.

How long does it take to build muscles and gain muscle mass certainly depend the body type you have but it will also depend on numerous other factors as well.

The only thing i could say about building muscle fast is by training intelligently. Nobody wants to waste their precious time while getting little to no results right? You could apply advance techniques such as explosive lifting, drop sets, etc. in order to change the stimulus that your muscle receives and in turn, leading to more muscle gains. There are many ways on how to build muscle fast but in the end, it's all about getting the will to do it.

Hi,
I am mainly an Ectomorph, with the shoulders of a Mesomorph. I have been working out 2 years. My biceps are well developed and my shoulders are coming on nicely. But my chest never grows, even though I do lots of compound exercises (5x5 until failure) My diet is good and healthy, I niether smoke, drink or do drugs. What am I doing wrong?

hello everyone,
Ive been bodybuilding for about 10 years off and on. Ive always been naturally big and can pack on muscle pretty easily. But now im at the stage in my life where its either do it now or never do it again. I take a multivitamin in the day and usual supplements from BSN before and after a workout. I lift everyday and do cardio every other day, but i still have that little pudge of fat i just need to destroy. I eat a high protein zero carb diet with fruits and vegetables thrown in. Any tips on how to blast away this fat?

If you eat carbs only after your workout you should lose the fat because you are carb cycling which will cause an insuline spike and shock your body into burning more fat.

hi martin do you have to lift more weight to gain size in muscles, or can you lift what you can and gain size that way?

I am an Ectomorph! And I hate it so hard! A mate in my class, is an Mesomorph, I exercise kick boxing, and workout often, but still he bench more than me. Im so tired of being the skinny one! I am strong and stuff, but whatever I do, he's always ONE step ahead of me, eventhough he's not exercising or doing any forms of physical sports. When I do my push ups, on kick boxing, I can't seem to gain any strenght, last year, (9months ago) I benched 61kg. as a Max, and now, 9 months later. I still bench 61kg, I've been doing alot of push ups and stuff at my workout days. And not eating bad food, but im not eating too much of the healthy part either. But The thing is, I don't think im an Ectomorph, I think im nothing, I can't seem to gain more weigh, nor strenght. I got muscles, but no chest, and no triceps, which makes me look like a ****.

Hey there! While I was reading I could see myself from 2 years ago in the text, being in the same situation as you. Don't worry, there is a cure.

First off, kick boxing might not be the best choice of muscle gaining sport. I've done taekwondo for quite some time (like kick boxing, but more kicky) and since it was an intense aerobic sport it actually got in my way of putting on mass. So I decided to take a break from martial arts, get the body I needed and then go back to taekwon-do again to maintain the results.

I did a split program, training one muscle group a day for 5 days a week (note that total isolation isn't achievable). Core was done every other day. I was basicly doing 4 sets of 10x8x8x6 (first set-10, second -8, etc) reps of whatever exercise I was doing (except for abs) and I did about 4 exercises for each muscle group. Should I feel that the reps I was doing were getting easy, I'd add another 2.5 the next week.

When I first started, I benched like 35, 40 at max. In about 3 months I could lift 70kg, 65kg with pretty decent form. I kept on training in the gym for another 2-3 months and when I stopped, I was lifting 80-85kg. I got the body and strength I wanted, cause that was my goal. Now I go jogging and train martial arts at home to keep fit.

I guess what was key to my "success" (dunno if you would see it as such), was keeping track of my training and results, never skipping workouts and getting a break from aerobic exercises.

PS:I didn't follow any diets or such but I did try to eat meat/dairy products atleast every 2 out of 3 days. I also ate various fruits and vegetables and drank often mineral water. I gained little over 10kg lean body mass. I now have about 10% body fat and weigh 79kg at 186cm height (didn't want to get too bulky).

PS2: I do pushups for muscle endurance and explosive strenght and got pretty nice results. It didn't give me any muscle strength as for lifting heavy weights though. You have to choose what your goal is. If kickboxing is important to you then you might want to consider achieving explosive strength for striking power, not only pure weight lifting strength.

All the best, Chacho!

Hi Ash,

Hardly anybody fits into just one of the above body types, normally you are a combination of two. I would say you are a mix of mesomorph and ectomorph. You have plenty of advantages this way, and this in fact the same body type I started with in my early teens.

All of your questions are answered on this site so either do a search on the left or look through the menu to find your answers. That's what I spend all writing up so feel free to make the most of it mate.

Thanks, Reuben
