How does alcohol affect building muscle?

Whether you're a student, businessman, crane driver or rock star, many of us love helping ourselves to a few drinks every now and then. The fact is, a drinking culture is engrained into our society, it has become second nature to bring a few drinks to the party or have a few beers while watching the footy on the weekend.

If your one of the billions who enjoy the odd beverage, I've written this post for you!

What affect can alcohol have?

Alcohol to you and me is any drink containing 'ethanol', commonly found in the form of beer, wine or spirits.

We all know that alcohol can cause slurred speech, clumsiness and slow reaction times but does the consumption of alcohol have a direct impact on building muscle or is all the bad just washed away after a good sleep and feed the following morning?

Sorry to say it but alcohol has a very negative impact on some of the most important processes for changing the way your body looks.

Let's start with the big bad basics...

The catabolic affect

As I have mentioned many times over the last few months, one of the keys to getting lightning fast results is maintaining your body in an 'anabolic' state for as long as possible each and every day. This means your body is in 'tissue/muscle building' mode during times of rest and recovery. Alcohol on the other hand is completely opposite, it has a 'catabolic' affect on your body which instigates the process of 'tissue/muscle burning' once it enters the body and while it is filtered out.

Fat, fat and a little more fat

You might have heard that drinking beer makes you fat, well sorry old pal, it's not necessarily the beer that's the main problem. Raw alcohol (ethanol) has 7 calories of energy per 1g of liquid, this means that for 1 beer, 1 glass of wine or 1 shot of liquor you're getting approximately 12g of pure alcohol.

I'm no saint believe me, but I myself and lots of others have been known to enjoy a night with 20+ drinks under their belt.

20 beers = 240g of alcohol = 1680 calories of energy!

Now that's just the alcohol, add another few thousand for the carbs in the beer, your mixer when drinking spirits, the kebab you smashed down while stumbling round to find a taxi and your fun night out just turned into a fat filled nightmare!

So as you can see, alcohol equals lots of extra energy, but the most worrying thing is that alcohol isn't like other beneficial nutrients, it's most similar to FAT and can actually transforms proteins (amino acids) into fat cells, storing them as just that.

Pissin' like a racehorse!

That's right, alcohol is a 'diuretic' which means it actually increases your rate of urination. What does this mean? Well for starters, every time you use the toilet valuable vitamins and minerals are being flushed away too, which ultimately need to be replaced. Increased urination on a night out, means increased chances of dehydration due to an imbalance in water entering the body compared to the amount going out.

Once dehydration kicks in its impacts can last several days (hangover).

Dehydration = less BLOOD to a muscle during a workout = less OXYGEN and NUTRIENTS in that muscle = drastically reduced physical performance.

Banged up immune system

You might not think this is very serious but alcohol's affect on almost every major organ causes our body's natural immunities to practically switch off an take a holiday! This will increase your susceptibility to infections caused by viral and bacterial pathogens, meaning if someone is sick around you (consider the many public places people drink) you have a much greater chance of getting really sick too.

I hate being sick, it's one of those things I dread when I wake up with a sore throat in the morning. How many days of training will I miss? How will I maintain my eating plan?

Catching some form of common virus is often pretty hard to stop, but where is the sense in increasing those chances regularly by drinking a little too much, a little too often.

*Average alcohol consumption per person per year, by country. How do you rate?

The impact on your muscle building hormones...

When you look at a bodybuilder or athlete that 'claims' to be completely natural and you think to yourself that there is NO WAY KNOWN that they got that way without performance enhancing drugs, it is most often due to the athletes success at manipulating their natural supply of anabolic hormones with a correct approach to their diet, training and recovery.

> Insulin
> Growth Hormone
> Testosterone
> IGF-1

The above 4 hormones are absolutely instrumental in building muscle mass and maintaining low levels of body fat. The consumption of alcohol has been proven to REDUCE the production and release of testosterone and growth hormone immediately once absorbed, lasting several days later.

Alcohol increases the production of cortisol

For those in the know, cortisol is one of those hormones we want to stay away from!

Cortisol has the opposite effect of the above 4 hormones and is the primary 'catabolic' hormone in our body. It's main roles include;

> Reduces GH and testosterone output
> Stops protein synthesis in its tracks
> Halts tissue growth

With alcohol's ability to increase cortisol levels by upwards of 150% in 4 hours, not much more needs to be said.

So what can YOU do?

In order of effectiveness, here is some tips I recommend for you;

1) Limit or stop of your alcohol consumption during intense periods of training.

Be serious with yourself, you wouldn't be in this position if you didn't want quality results, those results come from making a commitment to a routine for an extended period of time. Ideally, staying completely off the drink for an 8-12 week period during your program would be most beneficial, but if that's simple not possible and that is totally understandable, try your best to limit your consumption to as little as possible.

2) Don't go crazy!

It's often not the alcohol itself that causes the problems, but the amount we drink. In fact beer and red wine in small doses can be very beneficial to your health with its high levels of antioxidants to protect and watch over our cells.

3) Drink the clear stuff at the same time

No I'm not talking about vodka! Try and drink a full glass of water with every 3 glasses of beer, wine or spirits. That's not too much to ask is it? Also, before putting your head down for the night, drink at least 500ml (16 fl oz) of water and keep some next to you for when you wake up.

4) Eat before a drinking session and not straight after

This is important as eating before drinking can help alcohol's absorption and control its effects. Eating after, not only increases the amount of calories in your body which need to be processed but puts excess pressure on your metabolism causing a much larger amount of food to be converted into fat stores rather than glycogen (energy) or amino acids (protein).

5) Drinking is not an excuse to miss a workout

Just because you woke up in someone else's bed with your eyebrows shaved off, doesn't mean your muscle building goals should fly out the window! Alcohol is known to depress your nervous system, which reduces the connection quality between your brain and your muscle. Trust me, your explosiveness and overall strength will be pretty ordinary a day or two after a heavy night, so save a multi station circuit training session for days like this. This will raise your heart rate and allow you to maintain it there for 20-30 minutes, helping to flush the body of its toxins and return it to near peak physical condition.

Here are a couple questions for you! (answer in comment box below)

1) How often do you drink alcohol, what do you drink and how much?
2) Have you tried training with a hangover, how did you perform?

Hi Jacob,

Food isn't the issue mate, it's ensuring your liver can still correctly function while you are drinking and the day or two after you drink.

Water is key to clearing out waste products and making sure you stay hydrated.

Drink 1 glass of water for ever 3 glasses of alcohol throughout the night and into the next day and you should be right.

Happy birthday by the way!

Reuben.

Pete  - wow you guys drink a lot!   |2010-04-02 20:02:04

I was amazed to hear so many people say they drink 12, 18, 20 beers on a Friday night. That's some serious drinking, I'd be concerned about liver damage. You'd be better of drinking a 4-6 beers 3 times a week.

Drink about once a month or so depending on if there is a party going on if not I dont drink.
As for the hang over i have tried a work out with a hang over i usually did a cardio work out and drank a ton of water to get rid of it all and the next day felt fantastic.

1)I kinda enjoy drinking, but i decreased it dramatically. About once per 2-3 weeks or so, and only red/white wine.

I usally drink once in a week, mostly on saturdays and then a little bit to much most times (mostly beer and whiskey).
I tried to lift weights several times, and for me it is dangerous. Last time i lay on a bench trying to lift my usally weight the bar nearly crashed to my chest... i only have half the power i have without drinking the night before. since that i am only jogging for an hour and go to the sauna afterwards on sundays.

1)I drink about twice a week friday and saturday usually a 6-pack of heineken + shots given from friends.

2)Yes I have, I didnt do aswell as usual but that could have been cause i was weight lifting at the party.
eliot  - not the best idea   |2009-10-18 19:16:24
when i first got back into exercising a few years ago i did not drink very much. i smoked pot daily and this seemed to have no effect on my cardio/strength performance (to answer Jordan's question). i have since started drinking a bit more heavily (4-8 drinks regularly) and have noticed a drastic plummet on my energy levels and strength gains. reading this article has just further cemented the fact that i need to cut way down on alcohol consumption.
Jean  - My alcohol consumption.   |2009-10-17 05:11:46
Im kind of embarrassed but here is my answer: I drink hard twice a week in the weekend. By hard I mean vodka, around 500ml(half a litre) with cola. Sometimes more than that.

Trying to cut down on it .. but its become my lifestyle! No wonder I lost 4kg since december! and i probably look less thin! :O

Havent been training either!

Great artical,
1. I drink 1 to 3 beers a night, or red wine. I love the tast of a good pale ale/IPA or a Port. High in calories I know.
2. With a hangover "knock on wood" is rare, but when i have one I call it the 1:20 sickness. Cause at 1:20pm is when I can get up. I don't work out but my wonderful wife takes care of me then makes me go for a walk or swin at the beach. After that Im good.

When I started reading your e-mails I was at 170 now Im at 200. Thanks

Matthew

I don't drink. The taste is horrible and it looks horrible. im happy i dont drink, and i will never drink.
Julian  - Great Article   |2009-10-06 14:20:18
Great Article.. Great stuff to know.. Thanks..

1)I usually dont drink unless im at a party and I rarely have party's going on, so I would say I drink maybe once every 2-3 months. I would normally drink Wild Turkey with coke, about 2 shots to a cup of coke and I drink maybe 3 cup over 4 hrs.

2) I have never tried to workout with a hangover and I have only had a hangover once. It was the first time I drank, a few years, back so I wasn't really working out back then.

The chart talks for its self, we danes like our alcohol im afraid. its involved in almost everything.

I was told many years ago that working out with a hangover is doing more damage than good, is this true? ever since i was told this i havnt done it. Is it safe to try??
Jons   |2009-10-05 22:18:14
Im always drinking bourbon or beer on the weekend. Training with a hangover isnt too bad for me, few glasses of water, healthy breakfast and training is a breeze. I do find i'm weaker and Im sweating more but boy its a good feeling when Im done.

Dustin   |2009-10-05 13:56:42
I tend to drink about once a week, usually 12-18 beers. But what you mentioned with the drinking water and eating beforehand, i have always done anyway. Because of this, I've never even had a hangover to deal with.

Hey man,

I actually just started experimenting with alcohol for the first time this summer...just like to chill with friends and have a couple drinks...but the next morning i felt like crap and didnt wanna lift...and on days that i dont lift i feel like crap all day and it sucks big time...so ive sworn off drinking forever cuz i wanna get muscle big, and not beer belly big...

take care

Hey Ruben
it's a great article, i whas totally surpised when I saw the world map, my country's score wasn't to good but i don't drink a lot of alcohol. Maybe 2 beers on only friday. Not every week, maybe 3-5 beers a month. Haven't tried to train with hangover
speak to you soon mate
Stu  - Beir   |2009-10-05 08:01:32
Hey Reuben,

Great article, I've had problems with this in the past, but I don't drink nearly as much as I did in high school. Still I drink a large amount about once every couple of weeks. I do drink smaller amounts more often, maybe 2-4 beers ever 2 days. I've never had the heart to do weight training hungover, but I've done a Judo workout a few times! Of course it always turns out to be one of the sessions we do 200 push ups and a million firemen's carry squats... Felt pretty shitty.
Arne Dörrbaum  - ...   |2009-10-05 07:46:20
it'S a great article though i'm straight edge and never have to be faced with a hangover caused by alcohol;)
Casey   |2009-10-05 07:15:35
This article was pretty good, I just turned 21 (the legal drinking age for California) I haven't had a binge drinking session because I didn't want it to affect my training. But I have a beer about once every two weeks or so, not much time for partying with school, work, and training haha.
Nick   |2009-10-05 06:29:01
Hi Reuben, fantastic timing on this article! I've been in university for about two months now, so this article is exactly what I need.

1. I drink a lot of alcohol just one night a week (Friday night). Probably in the range of 10-15 beers.

2. My workout schedule demands me to workout 6 days a week. So I can either skip Saturday morning and rest my hangover by working out on Sunday, or I can just deal with it and lift. I usually do the latter. It sucks, I always feel despondent and lazy. A lot of times I forget what I'm doing, and I'll realize that I'm just standing in front of the mirror for 30 seconds. Definitely not productive at all.
tenbears  - Drinking   |2009-10-05 06:09:21
If I am not working out I tend to drink at least once a week. When I get into a good routine I rarely drink unless my wife makes me go out and be social, then I drink to deal with it. I am not a very social person.
Anonymous   |2009-10-05 05:27:45
1) once every few months, about 10 pints
2) No I dont go nowhere near the gym!
omar ishaq   |2009-10-05 04:25:19
1) How often do you drink alcohol, what do you drink and how much? sorry i dont drink

2) Have you tried training with a hangover, how did you perform? no i dont drink never had a hangover

michael  - drinking   |2009-10-05 04:15:12
1) I drink miller light beer. I drink about once a week. I used to drink about 18-20 beers in 1 night but I try not to do that anymore because I don't want to die and too much beer gives me anxiety. I'm usually ok if I keep it under a 12 pack and like you said get some food and drink water.

2) After a light night of drinking I just do the treadmill if anything. It helps sweat the beer away.
Marko  - Nice and direct.   |2009-10-05 03:42:13
1) Well I am from time to tima a weekend alcoholic.
I did not drink during week days but when Sutarday comes, well lets just say that devil comes loose :)

2) I had trained during hangover but only 2-3 times. It was hell, but at the end it felt GOOD, becouse I was able to sweat all alcohol out of system.
But performance was very poor, becouse. It felt like my head will burst and I was very weak the day after exercises.
Robin  - hey   |2009-10-05 03:41:19
Well. I don't drink. Simple as that.

(well sometimes, very rarely, i can grab a beer or something)
Will  - Informative!   |2009-10-05 03:03:39
Previously I was a student going out 3 times a week, usually a good 8 beers each time. Now Ive graduated I've kept off the stuff for 12 weeks! Saves a ton of money and performance in the gym is better, less irritable etc. Not much impact in terms of fat loss but my diet needs a minor tweaking anyway.

I have frequently trained with a hangover, strength was just as good as normal but endurance, motivation etc were all lacking, not to mention the crapI ate for the rest of the day!

Logan  - Tee Totaler   |2009-10-05 02:25:22
I don't drink right now, havent had alcohol since December 08. I go on and off the booze for extended periods of time... this is due to the fact that I'm a total lightweight. Two pints of guinness and I'm anyone's. Good to get a clear picture on the calorie intake of alcohol. Have never trained with a hangover, don't intend to try it. ;)

Andrew Browne  - Great Article   |2009-10-05 02:17:04
I have cut right down on the booze and have noticed a marked improvment in my shape. Working out with a hangover is akin to working out without hydrating or recovering after. The piss just pours out of a lethargic body leaving you sad deflated and worn out for days.

Now i am down to a couple of beers on a weekend every now and then and my waisteline has reduced noticably as has my overall stamina and performance on my heaviest work out routines.

Just to think it only tok me 29 years to work it out.
Midas  - Moderate!   |2009-10-05 03:30:54
1)I drink daily 2 beers, on a Saturday night I'm might drink 3-4 beers.

2)I don't train on weekends and I don't get hung over from a few beers(1-4). But also drink a ton of water usually and I eat well, so that might be an important factor. I don't feel it really hinders me.

What you say about hormones is true, but moderate alcohol consumption may decrease testosterone levels only by a few percent. Most studies that have been done are with high dosages; 100grams a day.

I think moderate alcohol consumption has little or no affect on strength and size.

"In one study, subjects were given the equivalent of about six drinks and then tested for strength and endurance. Actually, they were tested before, during, and 24 and 48 hours after ingesting the alcohol. Contrary to what the researchers expected, the alcohol had no observable effect on any of the strength tests. Additionally, there was no increase in creatine kinase, an indicator of muscle damage.

In a similar study, the equivalent of about five drinks prior to testing had no effect on isometric strength, muscle stiffness, muscle soreness, or creatine kinase activity compared to the study's alcohol-free group."

jonte   |2009-10-05 01:39:06
1) Once a week, about 10 beers.

2) Yes. Almost impossible to perform at all in my opinion

I want to stay away from alcohol, but all of my friends are big drinkers. So I usually just go for the ride.

Any tips for me to stay away from it?
Dave  - Great Article   |2009-10-05 01:37:58
Fantastic Article, I used to drink quite heavily for a few years when I was younger, now I've actually cut it out to maybe one or two drinks for every 5-7 months!! I feel great, I can still go out and have even MORE fun, and although I get the whole nagging from mates, I just smile and rub their jiggling tummies! ;-)
